Without understanding how societal systems actually function, your initiatives will become fragmented, reactive, and predictably destabilized. We've seen this with DEI. Here are the 7 mechanics you need to know...

Good day,

She wasn't her usual self. "I'm afraid that we're all going to retreat to our silos," she said suddenly.

Those were the words of a veteran civil rights activist. They were the last bit of evidence we needed to stop everything and seek answers.

What is the source of so much blowback?

Most leaders point to the same familiar culprits: greed, bias, power, privilege, supremacy, injustice, etc.

But those are not causes—they’re symptoms.

The real reason is far simpler and far more costly:

You’re trying to drive change without a model of how social systems actually work.

Based on the quote above and others like it, we interviewed hundreds of CEOs, executives, organizers, activists, and community leaders and asked one foundational question:

“What framework do you use to understand societal dynamics and predict behavior?”

Not one person had an answer.

They could describe issues in detail.

They could cite history.

They could articulate grievances.

They could list tactics—protests, policies, campaigns, pressure, and voting.

But they could not describe the foundational mechanics of societal systems.

The result?

Initiatives became fragmented, reactive, and predictably destabilized.

DEI is a perfect example—we warned years ago that without a systems model, initiatives would face rising opposition and be strategically undermined.

That is precisely what has happened.

7 Things To Know About Societal Systems (or pay the price)

      1. Societal systems aren’t abstract—they’re made of individuals. Every individual is driven by one thing: their personal agenda for growth and development.

      2. Individuals with leadership talent don’t stay isolated—they form groups built around shared agendas. The technical name: social identity groups.

      3. Every social identity group is always doing one of two things: → Advancing its agenda → Reacting to someone else’s. In social systems, neutrality is a myth. Every group is moving—forward or against.

      4. Individuals (including you and me) voluntarily join groups (race, ethnicity, religion, recreation, politics, business, etc.) if we believe they will help fulfill our personal growth agendas. Loyalty is rented, not owned.

      5. Group leaders advance the group’s agenda through one of two strategies: → cooperation and collaboration or coercion and force

      6. When leaders cannot advance a group’s agenda, they increasingly resort to force and coercion. That is the source of “opposition” and “blowback”. In extreme cases, force and coercion take the form of militancy or terror.

      7. Individuals will leave or realign with new identity groups the moment their personal growth agenda can be better served elsewhere. This is why movements swell… and why they collapse.

Understand this, and you can develop the strategic intelligence to predict and avoid opposition before it forms. You can also develop strategies to attract people to you.

Ignore how societal systems work, and you'll be blindsided by blowback and opposition.
